How to Play Minesweeper

Minesweeper is a puzzle game where you uncover tiles on a grid without hitting hidden mines. Open all non-mine tiles to win. Click a mine and the game ends.

Each number you reveal tells you how many mines are hidden in the 8 adjacent tiles. Empty tiles expand automatically, revealing safe areas around them.

Suspect a tile hides a mine? Right-click it (or use Flag Mode on mobile) to place a flag.

What the Numbers Mean

A number shows exactly how many mines are in the 8 surrounding tiles. For example, a '3' means exactly three mines are adjacent. Combine clues from multiple numbers to deduce mine locations logically.

11 mines adjacent
22 mines adjacent
33 mines adjacent
44 mines adjacent
55 mines adjacent
66 mines adjacent
77 mines adjacent
88 mines adjacent

Strategy by Difficulty

  • On Beginner (9×9), start from corners and edges to open safe zones. Flag tiles you're certain are mines to avoid accidental clicks.
  • On Expert (30×16), probabilistic reasoning is essential. When you can't be 100% sure which tile is safe, compare adjacent number patterns to pick the least risky option.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the first click always safe?

Yes. The first tile you click and its 8 neighbors are guaranteed mine-free, so you can always start safely.

What does the number 2 mean?

Exactly 2 of the 8 tiles surrounding it contain mines. Count flagged neighbors to narrow down where the remaining mines are.

How do I place flags on mobile?

Tap the Flag Mode button at the top to switch modes. When Flag Mode is on, tapping a tile places or removes a flag instead of opening it.

What are the limits for Custom mode?

You can set up to 30 columns and 20 rows. Mines can be set up to 50% of the total tile count.

Do I need to flag all mines to win?

No. You win as soon as all non-mine tiles are opened. You don't need to flag every mine.

Are my best times saved?

Yes. Your fastest clear times for Beginner, Intermediate, and Expert are saved in your browser. Clearing browser data will reset them.
