What Is EXIF Data?

EXIF (Exchangeable Image File Format) is metadata automatically saved inside photo files by your camera or smartphone. It includes the date and time, GPS coordinates, camera brand and model, lens info, aperture, shutter speed, ISO, and more. When you share photos online, this data travels with the image and can expose personal information.

Why GPS Data Is a Privacy Risk

GPS metadata records the exact latitude and longitude where a photo was taken. Sharing a photo taken at home can expose your home address. Photos of children with GPS data can be a safety risk. Removing metadata before sharing photos online is a simple and effective privacy measure.

Your Files Never Leave Your Browser

All processing happens entirely in your browser using the Canvas API. No files are sent to any server, so your photos and personal data stay completely private.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will removing EXIF data reduce image quality?
No. JPG, PNG, and WebP files are all processed by directly stripping metadata from the binary data, so there is no quality loss. A Canvas API fallback at 92% quality is only used when binary processing fails.
Can removed metadata be recovered?
No, the downloaded file will have no metadata. However, your original file remains untouched on your device, so you can always refer back to the original.
Are my photos uploaded to a server?
No. Everything runs entirely in your browser. Your files are never sent to any server, keeping your personal data completely private.
Do smartphone photos contain GPS data?
Yes. Smartphone camera apps record GPS coordinates in photos by default when location access is enabled. This applies to all photos taken with location services on.
Do PNG files have metadata?
Yes. PNG files can contain metadata in tEXt and iTXt chunks, including author, software, and description. WebP files can also contain EXIF chunks. This tool removes both.
Is HEIC format supported?
Not currently. HEIC is not supported by the browser's Canvas API. Please convert your HEIC file to JPG or PNG first.
