Image Format Comparison

JPG

JPG — Best for Photos

Uses lossy compression for small file sizes. Ideal for photographs and images with complex backgrounds. Does not support transparency.

PNG

PNG — Supports Transparency

Lossless compression with no quality degradation. Perfect for logos, icons, and images with transparent backgrounds. Typically larger file size than JPG.

WebP

WebP — Modern Compression

Developed by Google, WebP files are 25–35% smaller than equivalent JPGs. Optimized for web use and supported by all modern browsers.

GIF

GIF — Animated Images

Supports animation. Upload a GIF and resize it while keeping all frames and movement intact. Limited to 256 colors, so best suited for simple graphics rather than photos.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will resizing an image reduce its quality?
For JPG and WebP, quality depends on the quality slider setting. At 85% quality, the difference is barely noticeable while file size is significantly reduced. PNG is lossless, so quality is never affected.
What happens to a transparent background when converting PNG to JPG?
JPG does not support transparency, so transparent areas will be filled with white. To keep transparency, use PNG or WebP as the output format.
Can I crop just part of the image before resizing?
Yes. Use the crop editor to drag and select the area you want to keep. Drag the handles to resize the crop box, or click the background to draw a new crop area from scratch.
What is WebP and when should I use it?
WebP is an image format developed by Google that delivers the same quality as JPG at 25–35% smaller file sizes. It's ideal for images used on websites and blogs.
Does animated GIF resizing preserve the animation?
Yes. When you upload a GIF, the crop and resize are applied to every frame, so the animation is fully preserved. GIF files can only be converted to GIF format.
