What Is an IP Address?

An IP address (Internet Protocol Address) is a unique numerical label assigned to every device connected to the internet. Just like a home address, it identifies where to send and receive data on the internet.

The IP shown on this page is your public IP address — the external address assigned by your Internet Service Provider (ISP). Multiple devices on the same router share the same public IP.

Public IP vs Private IP

Public IP

The external address assigned by your ISP, visible on the internet. This is the IP shown on this page.

Private IP

The internal address used within your local network (e.g. 192.168.x.x). It cannot be accessed directly from the internet.

What Can Be Determined from an IP Address?

An IP address can reveal your approximate country, region, city, and ISP. However, it cannot reveal your exact home address or personal identity.

IP-based geolocation is generally accurate to the city level, but may differ from your actual physical location. The ISP's server location may be shown instead.

VPN and Your IP Address

When using a VPN (Virtual Private Network), the VPN server's IP address is shown instead of your real IP. This allows you to mask your location or appear to browse from a different country. Proxy servers work the same way.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is my IP address?
Your IP address is the unique address assigned to your device when connecting to the internet. The IP shown here is your public IP (the address seen by external websites).
Can someone find my exact location from my IP?
Only an approximate city-level location can be determined. Your precise home address cannot be identified from an IP address alone.
Does my IP change when I use a VPN?
Yes. When using a VPN, the VPN server's IP address is shown instead of your actual IP.
What is the difference between IPv4 and IPv6?
IPv4 uses the format 123.45.67.89, while IPv6 uses a longer hexadecimal format. The internet is transitioning to IPv6 due to IPv4 address exhaustion.
Does my IP address change?
Most home internet connections use dynamic IPs that can change upon reconnection. A static IP service keeps your IP address fixed.
